Santanyí magazine ···90 Cala d’Or “The golden bay“ “What’s the best way to the beach please?“ “Well – which beach? Cala d`Or, Cala Gran, Cala Esmeralda or Cala Egos?” No, Cala d’Or does not have an enormous beach strip, but wonderful small or wide “calas” with crystal blue waters and fine sands. And in Cala Longa there is one of the island’s largest and most beautiful marinas. More than 80 years ago Mallorca was a sleeping beauty and so was the Cala d’Or region when José Costa Ferrer, architect and bohemian, in the early thirties started to urbanize a costal area inhabited only by pine trees, for his friends. It was supposed to be a unique project for actors, writers, painters – well artists – who should be inspired by their likes. The former landowners basically considered the guy from Barcelona insane and gladly sold him their property for a few pesetas, as in their eyes it wasworthless. “Pep” Costa, originally from Ibiza, loved the ibizencan architectural style, which to this day gives distinction to Cala d’Or’s townscape. Neither “Pep” Costa, nor the former landowners at this point could know that Mallorca would become one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. Today English, German, French, Danish, Finnish, Italian is spoken – Spanish as well. Cala d’Or is no longer an insiders’ tip - as hardly any beautiful places are. The little artist’s settlement was developed into a modern resort in the seventies and eighties last century. In the sophisticated marina “Porto Cari” and the city centres pedestrian zone there are boutiques selling international labels, modern bars and restaurants with Mediterranean, French and Italian cuisine. If you do wish to get a slight feeling of what made “Pep” Costa and his artsy friends stay here in the thirties last century, you should stroll through old Cala d’Or. Where do you find that?
