En Joan Bonet de “ses Pipes” Creator of inspired pipes He is a very good friend to his friends, who are spread all over the world. Some of them hold one of his pipes, others admire his way of writing and his views of life. And he carefully observes each place, person or situation with surgeonlike interest. Life seen through his eyes changes it’s texture, therefore his remarkable expertise in modelling the pipe’s wood is not astonishing, every single one is a little gem. Joan Bonet Nadal, better known as Bonet de ses Pipes, was born in Manacor in 1.929, and has been living in Palma since 1.941. His father had been imprisoned by Franco’s regime during the civil war due to being part of the left wing republicans. In prison he learned the craft of making pipes, his son followed the same craft from 1943 until his retirement. He wrote some books related to his trade as a “pipemaker” in Spanish like: Las pipas (1.976), La pipa en Baleares (1.980) y El pipamerón (1984). But his stories in Catalan, almost always related with pipes are especially outstanding: Les rondalles de la pipa (1978), Pipades i vivències (1.983) and Amb pipa i sense (2.004). His stories, thanks to his placid and ironic view on life, are caracterized by humour and virtousness. He too translated L’art de fumar en pipa (1.986), by Joaquim Verdaguer into Catalan.
