Santanyí magazine ···14 Jaume Mesquida is a family winery that possesses 25 hectares of vineyards located in the municipal district of Porreres and that produces 50% of the grapes elaborated in the winery. The rest of the grapes they buy from producers belonging to the DO Pla i Llevant of Mallorca. The firm was founded in 1945 by Jaume Mesquida Barceló, the great-grandfather of the current proprietors. In June 2004 the brother-and-sister team of Bàrbara and Jaume Mesquida Mora took up the challenge of continuing the family’s work. This signified the incorporation of the fourth generation of Porreres winemakers, with the goal of continuing to be a pioneering winery and spreading the culture of wine. The winery is now run by Bàrbara Mesquida Mora, a graduate in philology from the University of Barcelona and a holder of the higher diploma in enology and viticulture from the Mercè Rossell i Domènech School of Sant Sadurní. Meanwhile, Jaume Mesquida Mora, a graduate in biology from the University of Barcelona, having completed a stage at the Enrique Foster winery in Mendoza (Argentina) to broaden his knowledge of viticulture and enology and learn new techniques, has taken charge of the integral management of the vineyards. “Our passion for wine leads us to experiment constantly; periodically we try to surprise the market with a new type of product. This means that the harvesting season is hectic, because we perform a large number of vinifications in accordance with the wines we want to obtain and the vineyards of origin.” The greatest concern of the brother-sister team in managing the vineyards is to recover the fertility of the soil, maintain it and improve it for the future. Many things to recover the fertility of our soil, but the most important is to make a change of mentality. Changing our way of looking at nature, at our surroundings and at life itself is the most important agricultural action that can be carried out. Bàrbara and JaumeMesquida have taken this personal decision and it is the commitment they have made at the winery.
